That was the title published in The New York Times online.

Shocked with this title I asked myself:

- “Did Google released a computer before my GPhone? WT*”.

This isn’t true, but it might be what the Google Team is thinking, or planned, for the future.

Following the NYTimes, Walmart started selling a $200 USD computer with the gOS pre-installed. The “Everex”(gPC) features a VIA C-7 1.5Ghz, 512MB RAM, and an 80GB hard drive.

But what is the gOS? – you might ask.

Somehow based on Ubuntu 7.10 this is a Linux operative System dressed up with Google. It is straight for the “usual computer user, that doesn’t understand much of Linux and Internet, but still want to give it a try”, or how the original site states – “beautiful desktop for normal people”.

I don’t have much to say about this, since I don’t plan to test this, but I can tell an Internet Connection is strictly required, because most of the applications are web-based. Although you have Open-office and a few more apps, the main goal is to use Google apps(Gmail, Google docs, Calendar, etc…).

And… Why Google OS title?

The interesting thing is that gOS true meaning isn’t really known, but sure it doesn’t mean Google OS. It probably mean Green OS[somehow environment friendly], but it features so many Google apps that people started to call it the Google OS.

If you are interested in more information about this you can go to hackosis and take a look at some screenshots, and a few funny comments, of this ‘new’ OS.

…and of couse the official site: http://www.thinkgos.com/.
